Dear Friends and Family,
Did you know that the first solar panel was installed in 1883?
We tend to forget how long it can take for a new technology to gain traction.
"It is really unpredictable to say which technologies will matter" said Marc Andreessen recently and if I may add "and when they will matter".
This is what makes investing in technology so fascinating. And so tricky.
Knowing if a technology will prevail is not enough. You also need to know when.
Think of it like playing the lottery—your lucky numbers might come up, but you never know which weekend drawing will make you a winner.
History is full of inventors, start-ups, and investors who got it right.
But it's also full of countless visionaries who were ahead of their time and ended up empty-handed.
Balancing foresight with timing is what venture capital investing is all about.
We are very happy to have participated in Trever's recent financing round led by TX Ventures and Market One Capital with the participation of Alex von Frankenberg and yours truly.
Trever is tackling a challenge that almost every bank will face in the near future: How do you make your IT systems future-proof?
Specifically, how do you integrate digital assets into a traditional core banking system when the required number of decimals jumps from 2 to 30?
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Connecting to various custody providers and dynamically selecting the best platform for trading execution are also significant hurdles.
Bank CTOs generally avoid tampering with their often outdated core banking systems, but when it comes to integrating digital assets, they have no choice.
Or, they could just choose Trever and save themselves a lot of headaches!
If you work in a bank and are scratching your head over how to enable your systems for digital assets quickly and without fuss, visit Hans-Jürgen Griesbacher at Trever in the beautiful city of Graz, Austria.
Ben and Sagar will attend Token2049 Singapore from Sep 15 to 21.
With our friends from Metaschool, the world's biggest community of web3 devs to learn, build and fund innovation, we are hosting a networking event on September 18.
If you happen to be in Singapore, and would like to meet the team, register here.
It's vacation time, and nothing beats a good book on the beach!
Before you pack your bags, make sure to grab a copy of "The Almanack of Naval Ravikant" collected by Eric Jorgenson, highly recommended by our esteemed colleague, Sagar.
Ravikant embodies the type of personality profile we love to support.
Born in India, he moved to Queens, New York, at the age of nine and went on to become one of the most respected startup investors in Silicon Valley.
Beyond his investment acumen, he's also known for his profound philosophical insights on life and business.
As he puts it:
"We moved to the US when we were very young. I didn’t have many friends, so I wasn’t very confident. I spent a lot of time reading. My only real friends were books. Books make for great friends, because the best thinkers of the last few thousand years tell you their nuggets of wisdom."
Ravikant's nuggets of wisdom are sure to keep you thinking long after you put down the book—perfect for a little intellectual stimulation during your downtime.
Join us in shaping the future of Web3 technology (we aim to get the timing right!) and consider becoming an investor in our fund.
We invest at an early stage worldwide in exceptionally talented and mission-driven founders (like the Trever team and many others) whose business models will take a giant leap forward through blockchain technology.
If you’d like to learn more, simply reply to this email (sent from my personal account) and let's arrange a meeting in person.
In the meantime, enjoy the Olympics in Paris, a refreshing drink on the beach, or wherever your passions may take you!
